My piece, Spookyberry, extends the imaginative world of ‘Sandy Island’ by envisioning the island as a tropical paradise where nourishment is both abundant and alive. Sandy Island’s fictional coordinates inspired me to imagine a utopian ecosystem untouched by the contaminants and scarcity of modern life. In this vision, the spider—a recurring symbol in my Happy Spooky universe representing agility, intelligence, and strength—follows a delicate, otherworldly tether toward Sandy Island, transforming into the Spookyberry: a vibrant, living food embodying vitality in its purest form. The work blends whimsy with longing, exploring the desire for powerful, uncontaminated sustenance and offering a playful yet potent metaphor for the richness that can exist only in a place that has never existed...
